Park Avenue Congregational Church, UCC
Deacons

The Deacons of the Park Avenue Congregational Church are concerned with the spiritual and temporal well-being of the members of the congregation.

Active Deacons are organized into a Board of Deacons. The Board of Deacons consists of twelve members of the congregation. Members of Board of Deacons serve three-year terms.

To paraphrase the church bylaws, the responsibilities of the Board of Deacons include:

  • Advises the minister concerning the services of worship. The Board works hand-in-hand with the Minister to design the Sunday service and various other services during the year.
  • Provides for pulpit supply in case of need. When the Minister is on vacation or otherwise unavailable the Board hires replacement preachers, or recruits lay preachers from the congregation, or preaches themselves.
  • Assists with the preparation and administration of the sacraments. Deacons, both active and formerly active, serve Communion during the Sunday morning service. The Deacon of the Month assists in the sacrament of Baptism.
  • Promotes the spiritual welfare of the church.
  • Cares for the sick and needy. The Minister and the Deacons visit the home-bound members of our congregation providing conversation, Communion, news, and a reminder of God's love, and the love of the congregation.
  • Inquires concerning absentees. The Board of Deacons records the attendance of church members and calls members who have unusual absences.
  • Seeks to enlist new members. The Board hosts occasional new member classes providing encouragement and information to prospective members.

The Board of Deacons keeps its minutes and other documents online. These files are password-protected. If you are a member of the PACC community, and need to know the password, please contact the web team via our email page.
